Goal: Convert Axiom to Theorem with proof for find_first_match_in_algorithm_implies_no_earlier_matches
Axiom 1 states that when find_first_match returns a position for a rule in a rule list, no rules in that list match at earlier positions. This captures the execution semantics of the sequential rule application algorithm.
Current State: Simple 8-line axiom statement (Line 1913-1920)
Challenge: Bridge the gap between single-rule search (find_first_match only checks one rule) and multi-rule execution context (algorithm tries all rules before returning a match).
Solution: Two approaches available, with significant infrastructure already proven.
(** ** Axiom 1: Algorithm Execution Semantics *)
(** When find_first_match returns a position for a rule that's in the rules list,
it means no rules in the list match at any earlier position.
This captures the execution semantics: when searching sequentially through rules,
finding a match at pos means all rules were tried at positions [0, pos) and none matched.
*)
Axiom find_first_match_in_algorithm_implies_no_earlier_matches :
forall rules r_head s pos,
(forall r, In r rules -> wf_rule r) ->
In r_head rules ->
find_first_match r_head s (length s) = Some pos ->
no_rules_match_before rules s pos.
Given:
rulesr_head that's in the listfind_first_match r_head s (length s) = Some pos (found match at position pos)Proves:
no_rules_match_before rules s pos (no rules in list match before position pos)The Gap: find_first_match is defined for a single rule only:
Fixpoint find_first_match (r : RewriteRule) (s : PhoneticString) (fuel : nat)
: option nat := ...
It doesn't know about other rules, so it cannot directly prove that ALL rules don't match.
The Context: The property IS true in apply_rules_seq execution:
pos, it's applied and search restartspos means positions [0, pos) were already checked for ALL rulesThese lemmas are ALREADY PROVEN and available:
(* Line 1576: Definition *)
Definition no_rules_match_before (rules : list RewriteRule) (s : PhoneticString) (pos : nat) : Prop :=
forall r, In r rules -> forall p, (p < pos)%nat -> can_apply_at r s p = false.
(* Line 1628: Base case - proven *)

Lemma search_invariant_step_all_rules :

Lemma find_first_match_establishes_invariant_single :
forall r s pos,

Key Insight: Much of the infrastructure for proving Axiom 1 already exists!
(* Line 444: Proven *)
Theorem find_first_match_is_first :
forall r s fuel pos,
wf_rule r ->
find_first_match r s fuel = Some pos ->
(forall p, (length s - fuel <= p < pos)%nat -> can_apply_at r s p = false).
(* Line 620: Proven *)
Lemma find_first_match_from_is_first :
forall r s start remaining pos,
wf_rule r ->
find_first_match_from r s start remaining = Some pos ->
(forall p, (start <= p < pos)%nat -> can_apply_at r s p = false).
(* Line 724: Proven *)
Lemma find_first_match_equiv_general :
forall r s start fuel,
(fuel <= length s)%nat ->
(start = length s - fuel)%nat ->
find_first_match r s fuel = find_first_match_from r s start (fuel + 1).
These establish that find_first_match returns the FIRST (leftmost) position where a rule matches.
Strategy: Add execution context as explicit hypothesis, making the property provable.
Time: 20-25 hours
Advantage: Clearer semantics, smaller proof obligation
Disadvantage: Requires documenting the execution assumption
Strategy: Define inductive relation modeling algorithm state, prove it maintains invariant.
Time: 25-30 hours
Advantage: Complete formal model, no additional assumptions
Disadvantage: More complex, requires architectural changes
Convert the axiom to a theorem by adding an execution context hypothesis that captures what the algorithm guarantees.
